"Raw Power" by Iggy & The Stooges (1973)
CLASSIC ALBUM OF THE WEEK
Iggy & The Stooges  "Raw Power"  1973 (USA)
Happy birthday James Newell Osterberg! The artist known as "Iggy Pop" turns 66 years old on April 21, so this week's classic album is the third by the notorious Stooges, pioneers of punk. Since their previous album, original guitarist Ron Asheton was demoted to bass, replacing the fired Dave Alexander. The new guitarist was James Williamson, who continued to be Iggy's main collabotator til the end of the 1970's after the original Stooges dissolved. As fate would have it, the surviving members of the band that recorded this album have put out a brand new album Ready To Die this year (with Mike Watt replacing the deceased Ron Asheton on bass, as he had already replaced their other deceased bassist Alexander for the previous 21st century reincarnation of The Stooges). In between his 1970's and 2010's stints with Iggy, James Williamson was a vice president for Sony (I have a hunch he may have had a more lucrative career than Jimmy Osterberg!) Raw Power was produced by David Bowie, at the time a rising new star -- and coincidentally, Bowie also has a new album out this year (his first in about a decade). The brutality of Bowie's incredibly strange recording and mix of Raw Power (one song even includes clanking swords for additional percussion) is one of this album's greatest charms.
