"In Rock" by Deep Purple (1970)
CLASSIC ALBUM OF THE WEEK
Deep Purple  "In Rock"  1970 (UK)
It's James Brown's 80th birthday! But the CAOTW is an early heavy metal classic. Deep Purple began in the later 1960's as an only slightly heavier-than-averageflower powery baroque psychedelic group (Britain's answer to Vanilla Fudge). But by 1970 the line-up had evolved, most notably replacing original singer Rod Evans (who went on to form the supergroup Caption Beyond with former members of Iron Butterfly) with leather-lunged Ian Gillan (previously famous for portraying Jesus himself on the best selling original soundtrack recording of Jesus Christ Superstar!) The first thing this new and improved version of the group did was the dreadful and ridiculous Concerto For Group And Orchestra album (their rarest album; also apparently an hour long TV special in Britain). After that misfire, they knuckled down and produced Deep Purple In Rock, as ferocious an example of early heavy metal music as albums released that year by Zeppelin, Sabbath and Sir Lord Baltimore. This record marks the beginning of the band's peak years, culminating in the very popular Machine Head (1972) and Made In Japan (1973) albums to follow.
