"Loaded" by The Velvet Underground (1970)
CLASSIC ALBUM OF THE WEEK
The Velvet Underground  "Loaded"  1970 (USA)
Bye bye Lou. Rock and roll's poet laureate of the gutter, and the greatest "punk" of them all has passed away at age 71. His career spanned six decades, and styles ranging from trashy teenage dance music to baroque art music to electronic noise, as well as just so happening to invent "alternative rock" as well as "glam" and "punk" (and he would probably argue "heavy metal too" - and bizarrely enough, his final album was a very controversial collaboration with Metallica!) He convinced major record labels to release Metal Machine Music (1975; layers of shrieking feedback) and Take No Prisoners (1979; ranting monologues disguised as a double live concert album).  His only Top 40 radio single includes a line about "giving head"; he lived with a bearded transvestite for several years. The list of his boundary-redefining and even "fuck you bub" moves is legendary, but above it all Lewis Allan Reed was the founder and principle songwriter of The Velvet Underground, without a doubt the most important "underground rock" group that ever was. Loaded was his swansong with the band, and it is a wonderful collection of hook-laden, moving and mature, pure rock 'n' roll. Though not a hit at the time, arguably this album was the most influential of all the super-influential recordings by VU (they didn't just inspire a million bands, each one of their albums inspired a million different bands!!)
