"Space Hymn" by Lothar & The Hand People (1969)
CLASSIC ALBUM OF THE WEEK
Lothar & The Hand People  "Space Hymn"  1969 (USA)
This notorious second-string psychedelic sixties band is mainly remembered for their ridiculous name and the story behind it:  Lothar was the name of their theremin, and the band were "The Hand People" because you play the theremin by waving your hands in the air.  Secondarily, they were one of the first bands to feature a moog synthesizer.  But was their music any good?  They made two albums, and the answer is decidedly mixed.  I think most psychedelic music fans would have to agree their high point was the seven-minute title track to their second and final album, Space Hymn:  not only does it feature groundbreaking synthesizer burblings and a cosmic chorale, the singer even goes through a lengthy routine where he tries to hypnotize the listener!  Now that is rather psychedelic indeed!!
