"Scott 4" by Scott Walker (1969)
CLASSIC ALBUM OF THE WEEK
Scott Walker  "Scott 4"  1969 (USA/UK)
It's Scott Walker's 71st birthday this week! A pop singer from the British Invasion (though he was American) who led "family" singing group The Walker Brothers (who were not really brothers, none were named Walker, and in fact one of the three of them didn't even really sing!), Noel Scott "Walker" Engel is a singular artist whose career and music is like nobody else's. He has had two distinct peaks in his career, most recently with his trio of extreme art music statements Tilt (1995), The Drift (2006) and Bisch Bosch (2012), but his legend began back in the 1960's with his first four post-Brothers solo albums.  The first three (Scott, Scott 2 and Scott 3) were quite successful in Europe (he even had a weekly show on BBC for awhile), and featured his interpretations of Jacques Brel songs and other standards.  But his fourth, Scott 4, featured only his original tunes and was the first flop of his career.  Yet many fans think it is the finest album he has ever done, and even in the context of Scott's totally unique career this record stands out as different from all the rest.
