"Quicksilver Messenger Service" by Quicksilver Messenger Service (1968)
CLASSIC ALBUM OF THE WEEK
Quicksilver Messenger Service  "Quicksilver Messenger Service"  1968 (USA)
Quicksilver was one of the original Frisco Psychedelic bands, though they didn't make it on til vinyl til a year or more later than the Airplane, Dead and Big Brother. Often compared to the Dead (they toured together and liked to play "cowboys & Indians" together -- with the Dead being the Indians of course). However, QMS never really lived up to their potential though they released six or seven albums. Things seemed to go wrong right from the start: almost as soon as the original group was founded, their singer/songwriter "Dino Valenti" (born Chet Powers, also known as Jesse Oris Farrow, and the writer of hippie anthem "Get Together") was arrested for drugs and sent to prison. Though they performed one of his tunes on their debut album (titled "Dino's Song" in his honor), Valenti didn't appear on a Quicksilver album until their fourth release (at which point he completely took over the band). In the meantime, remaining members John Cipollina & Gary Duncan (the lead guitarists) along with Greg Elmore (drums) and David Freiberg (bass; later in Jefferson Airplane/Starship) soldiered on (later joined by ace Brit piano player Nicky Hopkins of Stones/Kinks/Who fame). Although the early 70's albums with Valenti are probably their most popular (including the hippie anthems and underground radio hits "Fresh Air" and "What About Me?"), personally I think their debut is the group's finest studio album. Though psychedelic rock fans would probably agree that their live album is their best overall.
