The Bob & Miles Birthday Show
Miles  Bob

"Kind Of Blue" by Miles Davis (1959)
CLASSIC ALBUM OF THE WEEK
Miles Davis  "Kind Of Blue"  1959 (USA)
This week's CAOTW is one of the greatest masterpieces of jazz, and therefore among the greatest masterpieces of American 20th century music. Miles Davis was an incomparable figure of his time: not only was he among the greatest and most popular artists in jazz, his inflence and appeal went well beyond the limits of one musical genre. Having already been present at the birth of bebop (playing trumpet for Charlie Parker), and having invented the "cool jazz" style with Gil Evans in 1949, Miles kicked off his third revolution with the "modal" style found on Kind. This riff-and-scale-based approach to improvising not only had a tremendous influence on the development of jazz, it leads directly to the improvisatory rock styles of the Dead, Airplane and all of the West Coast bands of the 1960's. Miles would have been 88 years old this week. Also celebrating birthdays this week: Bob Dylan turns 73 and the late Levon Helm (drummer and singer of The Band) would have been 74.  So this week on the show, we have a live band in the studio interpreting tunes from that legendary album, The Basement Tapes!
