Colours
for Pledge Drive!

"Red" by King Crimson (1974)
CLASSIC ALBUM OF THE WEEK
King Crimson  "Red"  1974 (UK)
This week colors are coming out of your radio for pledge drive! Red is the angriest of musical colors as you soon shall hear, and nothing could be redder than the sound of King Crimson's Red album. Featuring ye olde power trio format of guitar hero Robert Fripp, drum legend Bill Bruford and journeyman singing bassist John Wetton (in what was certainly his finest role), this album is about as far from Cream or the Jimi Hendrix Experience as a rock trio can get. Inspired by high fallutin' classical music concepts and improvisatory techniques but played with a sonic brutality 20 years ahead of its time (think Shellac or Helmet), this is a standout record from one of the most unique groups of the 20th century (and still on tour in the 21st century!) To add a dose of irony to the monumentalness of it all, this triumphant LP was released a month after Fripp disbanded the group! The next line-up of Crimson didn't come along until 1981.
