"White Witch" by White Witch (1972)
CLASSIC ALBUM OF THE WEEK
White Witch  "White Witch"  1972 (USA)
There are a few folks out there who may remember this band from back in the day, but I would wager that most people know about this record because of Lester Bangs' scathingly funny record review (compiled in his first book Psychotic Reactions & Carburetor Dung) which was not especially charitable (the nicest thing he says is that the band is "no worse than Deep Purple", snark!) It is tempting to file this alongside albums by Coven, Pentagram, Black Widow and of course Black Sabbath among the forefront of "occult" rock bands that cropped up in the early 1970's.  (Though I should point out that the Black Sabbath guys are apparently pious Christians, and actually it was The Rolling Stones who started the witch rock movement back in the 1960's.) White Witch does stand somewhat apart from these peers in that their twist was that they were a positive occult band practicing "white witchcraft" rather than the "black arts" (in other words, artsy dorks in face paint and robes). It almost goes without saying that this is an extremely "dated" record: Zeppelinesque power shrieks, long guitar solos, swirly Southern rock organ (the band is from Florida and was on the Capricorn label), songs about getting high, finding inner peace and resisting The Man - it's all there, maaaan. (There is also a second White Witch album from 1974, though I have yet to come across that one.)
