"Highway 61 Revisited" by Bob Dylan (1965)
CLASSIC ALBUM OF THE WEEK
Bob Dylan  "Highway 61 Revisited"  1965 (USA)
Bob Dylan is one of the all time greats, and this is his all-time greatest record.  A folksinger from the Midwest who reinvented himself as a post-modern Woody Guthrie, Dylan blew everybody's minds when he electrified his sound and united the "pop" and "protest" movements and thus created "hippies" and "the sixties" (at least from a music listener's perspective!)  Bob's first album of 1965 was the first with electronic instruments and rock beats taking up an entire side, but Highway 61 not only doubled-down on his controversial approach, it took it to a level that even Bob himself was never again able to reach. The album begins with a suprising snare drum shot followed the an explosion of jingle-jangle which frames "Like A Rolling Stone", an amazing, powerful song that seems to speak volumes without ever making itself clear. This LP includes other era-defining gems which ride that same paradoxical line, including the notorious "Ballad of a Thin Man" with its musical question "something is happening but you don't know what it is, do you Mr. Jones?" Naturally, the song never spells out the thing that hapless Mr. Jones is not quite sure about (because after all, he is YOU!)
