"Psychedelic Moods" by The Deep (1966)
CLASSIC ALBUM OF THE WEEK
The Deep "Psychedelic Moods"  1966 (USA)
This was the first album ever released with "psychedelic" in the title, coming out a month or so before the debuts by The Blues Magoos and 13th Floor Elevators. Those other two records are fine albums, but I would say that The Deep is the most far-out of the bunch. A one-off studio group that never performed live, their leader was a Greenwich Village folkie named Rusty Evans (who recently passed away in late 2015), and the producer was a guy who worked on Leslie Gore's hits and then later The Banana Splits TV show. Their only album was recorded on a shoestring budget, and in fact the musicians wrote half of it in the car while they were driving from NYC to the recording studio in Philly! The result is definitely not polished, but spontaneity wrapped in every studio trick available in 1966 results in a disorienting soundscape that is quite "psychedelic" indeed. However, the record label had no idea what to do with The Deep, who truly were ahead of their time (The Velvet Underground & Nico were still in the studio recording their also-very-spontaneous debut when Moods was released). The Deep album sank into obscurity almost immediately, without charting and probably no airplay (their label Cameo-Parkway was too busy hyping their newest superstars, a group with the peculiar name "? and the Mysterians"). The following year, Evans & the same gang tried again with an album called Psychedelic Psoul credited to The Freak Scene, and that album proved just as (un)popular.
