Election Night in America!?!

"Selling England By The Pound" by Genesis (1973)
CLASSIC ALBUM OF THE WEEK
Genesis "Selling England By The Pound"  1973 (UK)
Election night 2016! Well, not too many people saw that coming! Since this show/site/review is about music not politics, let's just say that this DJ knew enough to have no idea what was going to happen, so planned accordingly (not that I would have celebrated the victory of either candidate this year). In other words, the "election theme" this week is pretty high-level, and the CAOTW is a record I seem to play every time I am on the air on election night (this was my third presidential election on the air since 2004 - somehow I missed 2012). I believe "The Battle of Epping Forest" is Genesis' greatest track and one of the "top 5 prog rock tracks of all time ever." It was inspired by a contemporary news story about street battles between rival London gangs, but mixes in all sorts of imagery from throughout England's history, resulting in a progadelic narrative tapestry of "social types" battling for the soul of a country (based on often self-interested or vague rationales). Singer Peter Gabriel's lyrics and the performance thereof are a true tour de force as he changes accents and dialects every few seconds: cockney gangsters, Anglican priests, "Blackcap Barons" riding in limousines . . . The other outstanding track on this LP is "I Know What I Like (In Your Wardrobe)", which was the band's first hit single in the UK and is as funky, catchy and dramatic as it is unique and weird.
