Wilco "Yankee Hotel Foxtrot"  2002 (USA)
This was the buzziest rock album of 2002 (the year Dave 3000 started DJing at WORT). It had a dramatic backstory involving the record label dropping the band (the withdrawn release date was September 11, 2001!) So the band streamed it on the (still relatively young) internet. When it finally got an official release the fans loved it, the critics universally acclaimed it as a masterpiece, and there's even a documentary film about the making of the album that is pretty interesting (I Am Trying To Break Your Heart). Twenty years later, and most of Jeff Tweedy's songs on this album hold up (though arguably his skills have improved since then), and the mix by Jim O'Rourke (then a member of Sonic Youth) still sounds dreamy and weird. The underlying "Americana" vibe that was the root of Wilco's sound also helps keep things grounded and relatable. Wilco and Tweedy have continued to release new music and have remained Chicago's most iconic rock figures in the decades since.
