"Stand!" by Sly & the Family Stone (1969)
CLASSIC ALBUM OF THE WEEK
Sly & the Family Stone  "Stand!"  1969 (USA)
Sly Stone's birthday is March 15, and I usually pay respects every year since he was one of the most talented forces in 60's and 70's music.  This was the fourth Family Stone album, and the group's commercial breakthrough.  Scoring no less than five Top 40 singles (including the #1 smash "Everyday People"), Stand! was one of the best selling albums of its era and remains a timeless classic of "hippie soul."  The group appeared at the Woodstock festival later in the year, and at the dawn of the 1970's they were one of the most popular American groups around.  However drugs and personal turmoil started to tear the family apart, and original members Larry Graham and Greg Errico left the band during the recording of their next album, the devastating masterpiece There's A Riot Goin' On.  Sly faded away during the early 1980's, but he's still out there somewhere.  A band called The Family Stone carries on to this day with a couple original members and Sly's blessing, and he even performs with them sometimes.  Rumour has it he may even be working on a new album for release in 2010!!  (If that actually happens, it will be his first since 1982.)
Here's a smokin' TV appearance with the band in their prime playing a medley of four of their hits: "Everyday People",  "Dance To The Music", "Hot Fun In The Summertime" and "I Wanna Take You Higher".  And here's their next #1 smash, "Thank You (Falletinme Be Mice Elf Agin)" from 1970.   Sly got a lot more erratic in the mid-1970's -- here he is doing a slower version of the title track from this album, "Stand!" (remember to stay off the cocaine, kids!)  And here's Sly with the current Family Stone band (which includes Rose, Cynthia and Jerry from the original group) -- playing their final #1 hit, "Family Affair".
