It's the second week of WORT-FM's winter pledge drive, and so I'm launching a new segment on the show this week, "Two Thirty Theatre", in which we will spin "dramatic" and "episodic" works at 2:30am.  For our first selection, over the next six weeks we'll be playing Armand Schaubroeck's autobiographical debut album in its entirity.  Mr. Schaubroeck is a notorious oddity from the 70's underground scene, based out of Rochester, NY.  He independently recorded five albums between roughly 1972 and 1978, releases that were so underground that no one even seems to be sure what years they were put out (and Armand's rare public statements about his career don't shed much light either).  All of these records are highly "conceptual", and at least three could be considered "rock operas" (including the notoriously sleazy album called Ratfucker!)  Albeit performed in a dingy Velvet Underground/bar band style and fronted by a proto-punk scumbag who makes Lou Reed seem like a mere hipster!  The first of these underground gems is this week's CAOTW, a TRIPLE album which tells the (apparently entirely 100% true) story of how teenage Armand got caught stealing dimes from the ball-polishing machines at the bowling alley and served a year at Elmira State Reformatory.  It is an intensely personal album, and one of the most singular works of the rock and roll era:  a warts-and-all portrayal of the darkest side of "juvenile delinquency" that is like nothing else.  (We'll also be spinning all the tracks from Armand's Live At The Holiday Inn album over these six weeks, a "fake live" double album which consists entirely of remakes of songs from DEAD.)
Armand's only real video appearances are TV ads he made for the business he runs (an instrument and record emporium called House Of Guitars, which might also be where all his albums were recorded?)  This site has handy links to just about all the Armand media that there is online (including four of his wacky TV commercials).  Other stuff on the show this week:  listener requests for Mountain and Faust.
