"Bug" by Dinosaur jr. (1988)
CLASSIC ALBUM OF THE WEEK
Dinosaur jr.  "Bug"  1988 (USA)
Dinosaur jr. plays in Madison tonight, their third stop in town since the original group of J, Lou and Murph reunited seven years ago.  Though infamously dysfunctional and far from personally charismatic, the Dinos were one of the leading lights of the 1980's "DIY indie punk" scene and even became somewhat popular during the "grunge" era that followed.  Featuring epic guitar solos and heavy classic rock influences, they described their sound as "ear bleeding country" and indeed they do sound a bit like Neil Young & Crazy Horse, only simultaneously more agressive (instrumentally) and more lethargic (vocally).  This week's classic album was their third, and though the critics don't seem to rate it as highly as their second album, I think Bug is as good as anything they have ever done.
The "underground hit" from this album is Dinosaur's greatest song and one of the defining anthems of 1988: "Freak Scene" (super cheap indie label music video!)  "Forget The Swan" is a song from their first album (though here performed after the 2005 reunion of the original trio).  Another of their more popular tracks is a shredding cover of a song by The Cure: "Just Like Heaven".  Dinosaur jr. was one of the earliest underground groups to sign to a major label in 1990 (though only after firing original bassist Lou Barlow) -- somewhat ironically, "The Wagon" from that album is a statement about trendmongers.
