Country Joe & The Fish  "Electric Music For The Mind And Body"  1967 (USA)
CJ&F was one of the first San Francisco psychedelic bands, and their debut album from May 1967 is one of the earliest psychedelic albums as well as a true classic. Indeed, the group released two LPs during that groovy year which stand alongside the much more famous Jefferson Airplane's two LPs released in 1967 as San Franicisco's finest recordings from the summer of love (The Grateful Dead's debut was more like "white R&B" than acid rock, and Big Brother and Quicksilver did not get out of the gate until the following year). "Country Joe" was both the nickname for the singer and main songwriter of this band, as well as a nickname for Josef Stalin; "The Fish" was a reference to a Mao saying and also became the nickname for this band's fine lead guitarist, the underrated Barry Melton. So as you might imagine, their hippie politics were as radical as they come (the band was really based in Berkeley rather than San Fran proper). While their rants against LBJ and 'Nam may be dated (how many times have you heard their most famous song "I Feel Like I'm Fixin' To Die" during documentaries and pop culture productions about the sixties and/or Vietnam war?), when it came to grooving up a trippy light show this group was on the musical forefront of psychedelia. Unfortunately, following those first two classic LP's CJ&F sort of faded away in the early 1970's after two or three more forgettable records and a memorable moment in the Woodstock movie which didn't seem to help their career any. Meanwhile the Airplane turned into the Starship and The Dead slowly evolved into icons . . .
