"Heaven & Hell" by Vangelis (1975)
CLASSIC ALBUM OF THE WEEK
Vangelis  "Heaven & Hell"  1975 (Greece)
I've been collecting up lots of Vangelis albums on vinyl lately, and among the greatest works by this Greek keyboard virtuoso is this 1975 concept album.  One of the more interesting aspects of this record is that it's not nearly as synthesizer-oriented as his more famous later period -- Van's overdubbed symphonic percussion and the etherial vocals of the English Chamber Choir are equally dominant in the sound of this record.  The most famous piece on this LP is undoubtedly the track "Symphony To The Powers B, Movement 3" which you may recognize as the theme music from Carl Sagan's Cosmos TV program.  Two more Vangelis albums of particular note for fans of mystical prog rock are his previous solo release Earth (1973), and the double album 666 (1972) by his earlier group Aphrodite's Child.
Here's a video clip of a Vangelis live jam from 1982, and here's one of his more famous pieces "Pulstar" live in 1991.  For a time, he also formed the duo Jon & Vangelis with Yes vocalist Jon Anderson.
