"Egg" by Egg (1970)
CLASSIC ALBUM OF THE WEEK
Egg  "Egg"  1970 (UK)
Egg was one of the foundational, but lesser-known, of the British progressive groups who were lumped into the Canterbury Scene (though like many "Canterbury" groups, they have no connection to that particular English city -- Egg was formed by college students in London).  Their sound represented a wonderful amalgammation of electronic, rock, jazz and classical music with odd time changes, whimsical English lyrics and twenty minute long epic tracks.  Their original line-up was a quartet consisting of Dave Stewart on keyboards (later a member of Hatfield & The North and National Health), Mont Campbell on bass & vocals (also later in National Health), Clive Brooks on drums (he later played with Groundhogs, then became Pink Floyd's drum tech) and lead guitarist Steve Hillage (future member of Gong and popular solo artist).  Hillage left the band at the end of 1968, and the others continued on as a guitarless power trio much like Emerson Lake & Palmer, who had much greater success a couple years later with the same instrumental lineup.  The remaining trio started calling themselves Egg and released this, their first album, in early 1970, followed by a classic second album The Polite Force in 1971 and a final album released in 1974.  There was also a "secret" album recorded by the three guys from Egg along with their old pal Hillage (ie, the original quartet) recorded around the same time as the debut album, but released under the name Azrachel with pseudonyms for the musicians (who were already under contract as Egg by this point).
I don't think Egg ever performed for the cameras, but here's a couple interesting video finds: a clip of a rare  non-LP single called "Seven Is A Jolly Good Time" and a fan performing the first movement from a track off Egg's debut, "Symphony No. 2".  Here's Dave Stewart (note: not the same "Dave Stewart" that was in Eurythmics with Annie Lennox) playing with his slightly more successful later Canterbury supergroup Hatfield & The North.
