"Winds Of Change" by Eric Burdon & The Animals (1967)
CLASSIC ALBUM OF THE WEEK
Eric Burdon & The Animals  "Winds Of Change"  1967 (UK)
I found a copy of this "classic album" on Record Store Day this year, so I thought it would make a fine CAOTW. (Actually, it's the second time I have bought this album - though the first time it turned out there was no record in the sleeve! The lesson is: ALWAYS check the vinyl when purchasing used records!) This is the first Animals album where Eric Burdon gets top billing, because he was the last original member of the group by this point: all the rest of the band had quit or been fired. Though this album is generally considered a "classic turkey" of a disasterous bomb of a failure, I have always found it to be among Burdon's most enjoyable.  Eric's new Animals are full-on psychedelic, and he has mostly abandoned the "white boy bluesisms" of his previous work in favor of overtly poetic lyrics. In fact half of these songs are really not much more than poetry recitations with music (kinda like The Moody Blues!) However it also includes several classic tracks: "San Francisco Nights" was a top 10 single, and "Anything" and "Good Times" were also minor hits, while "It's All Meat" and "Yes I Am Experienced" (which answers the musical question posed by Jimi Hendrix's first album) are hard-rocking hippie period-piece grooviness. And then there's the poetry! The Rolling Stones "Paint It Black" is given an extended dramatic treatment, "The Black Death" narrates the story of the Bubonic plague, and "Man-Woman" tells it like it is with the chicks, maaan. As over-the-top as this record is, Eric and his Animals managed to top this sucker in 1968!  (PS - the review you'll find upon clicking the album cover to the left presents a fairly accurate description of Winds of Change; even though it awards a "1 out of 10 - worst album ever" rating, I agree with most of what is written there - except I think the author's criticisms are all reasons why this is a great psychedelic record!! In fact the closest thing I can think of is probably William Shatner's legendary debut album, which may have perhaps been inspired by Winds!)
