"EVOL" by Sonic Youth (1986)
CLASSIC ALBUM OF THE WEEK
Sonic Youth  "EVOL"  1986 (USA)
The Grateful Dead had more influence on the 1980's American post-hardcore scene than is generally acknowledged, and although Phish is the most popular "jam band" of that era, Sonic Youth were perhaps the most true to the psychedelic vision of the Dead's heaviest music. Take the meltiest bits of "Dark Star", the tribal drum frenzy of "Not Fade Away" and a lot of the "Feedback" jam from Live/Dead, add a dose of punk rock energy and urban beat poet lyrics and that is basically your Sonic Youth template. EVOL was their third long-player and a bit of a retrenchment after the soundscape music of their previous effort; most of the songs have the length (if not the structure) of a typical pop song, and the ambling sprawl of previous records begins to come into classic rock focus. No doubt the catalyst for this change was the addition of drummer Steve Shelley (from Wisconsin!), the fourth and final member of the classic lineup who remained in the drum seat until the band broke up 25 years later (they had previously gone through half a dozen drummers in five years). This was also their first release on the ultimate indie label of the time, Black Flag's SST records. The album's highlight is undoubtedly the final track, titled "Expressway To Yr Skull" on the LP label (but "Madonna, Sean and Me" on the jacket) which on the original vinyl  pressing ends in a locked groove yielding infinite jam.
