The Melvins return to Madison's High Noon Saloon on July 9th. Melvins crawled out of the Northwest in the middle of the indie rock 1980's with Sabbath-style riffs that defined the "Seattle grungerock sound".  Although never as popular as peers like Nirvana, Soundgarden and Pearl Jam, Melvins were always the purist/purest sludgy riff band and have outlasted those other groups and turned out to be the most influential heavy band of the last quarter century. In those hazy grungy early nineties when Nirvana were platinum-selling superstars, Kurt Cobain helped land Melvins a major label record label (with Atlantic, the home of Led Zep no less!)  The three LPs Melvins released in those days did not shift units like Nirvana, but looking back decades later they are a trio of classic albums. Cobain helped produce about half of this album and even contributed some drumming on the final "jam" track; the follow up Stoner Witch was an even more polished collection of riffs and experimental numbers, and the finale Stag is an eclectic twenty-song cycle which may be the best of the bunch.
