The notorious Kool Keith is performing in Madison tomorrow night (Wed Sep. 23, Majestic Theater). I call him "notorious" for lack of a better descriptor - I guess he is an "underground" musician, though after a 30-year career that is as eratic as it is often brilliant, the truth is he has outlasted the vast majority of his peers (how many rappers who put out albums in the 1980's are still making records today?) So he is sort of a legend, but one who is not well known and probably off-putting to a lot of folks who haven't really heard him -- you might even say he's the Don Van Vliet of rap!  (And like Beefheart, the critics never seem to "get it" -- the somewhat negative review linked to the left is the most positive one I could find.)  Keith is probably best known for being lead vocalist on the groundbreaking Dr. Octagon project of 1996, and for a few years he routinely changed his image and persona on every album: Dr. Octo was followed by Dr. Dooom and later an album simply entitled Matthew (no one but Keith seems sure what that concept was about). This week's CAOTW was released under Keith's own name, though features a character called Black Elvis (who seems to be lost in space, but that's the usual state of affairs on a KK LP!) Released right ahead of Y2K at the end of the groovy grungy nineties, Elvis/Space is classic fin de siècle music from the future of yesterday.
