Amon Düül II "Phallus Dei" 1969 (Germany)

This was the debut album by Düül zwei, the longer-lasting "serious musical group" spawned on a Munich hippie commune in the late 1960's. There is another group called "Amon Düül" (with no suffix) which was the "non-serious non-musical group" that confusingly released a handful of albums at the same time as II (the "original" group makes Hapshash & The Coloured Coat sound like Sgt. Pepper - only recommended as an atmospheric period piece, should you wish to experience the atmosphere of German hippies on acid chanting and banging away on whatever was at hand). Though AD2 went on to make several superlative prog-kraut masterpieces in the 1970's, somewhat in the vein of a Teutonic Pink Floyd-meets-Led Zeppelin, their debut is still really raw psychedelia. Singers Karrer and Knaup (the Balin & Slick of Germany) wail indecipherably, "third world" acoustic instruments are utilized, and the "songs" are basically "jams". But not dayglo flower power jams - their sound is distinctly of the "dark psych" variety pioneered by The Doors and Velvet Underground. Along with the classic debut album by Can, Phallus Dei marks the birth of the neue Deutsche kosmische Muzik - or "krautrock" as it became known in later years.
