"Zuma" by Neil Young & Crazy Horse (1975)
CLASSIC ALBUM OF THE WEEK
Neil Young & Crazy Horse  "Zuma"  1975 (Canada/USA)
Happy 68th birthday Neil! Zuma is one of the great albums from his illustrious career, as it represents the rebirth of his greatest band Crazy Horse. The original band only recorded one full album with Neil (though they also appeared on his next after that) before their rhythm guitarist and "second lead" singer Danny Whitten died of a drug overdose. Whitten's death inspired a series of depressing masterpieces (Neil's "Ditch Trilogy" of 1973-75 albums), so when Young reunited with Ralph Molina (drums & harmony singing) and Billy Talbot (bass & harmony singing) to bring back The Horse it was a clear sign that he was pulling out of his funk. The new guy in the "mark two" lineup is Frank "Poncho" Sampedro on unflappable rhythm guitar; they recorded Zuma in a house by the beach, and immediately set out on tour. The quartet of Neil, Ralph, Billy and Poncho has continued to rock the universe ever since -- though only periodically, with years off between activity (the latest NY&CH albums came out in 2012, and they were still touring in 2013).
