The title and cover art of this album make it look like it will be a mellow hippie affair, but in fact Leaf Hound is more or less a third-tier Led Zeppelin imitation with shades of Deep Purple, Uriah Heep, Free and The Who: your basic distilation of all the popular British Heavy Rock of the early seventies. Singer Peter French sounds like he wants to be Robert Plant or Paul Rodgers or Ian Gillan (and in fact he auditioned for the lead singer position with late-seventies versions of Deep Purple and Uriah Heep . . . though he lost those gigs he did join the lesser known bands Atomic Rooster and Cactus in their declining years). The rest of this band just wants to Rock Hard; though none of them are famous, a couple years earlier French had been the singer of heavy prog-blues band Black Cat Bones and three members of that group left to form the afforementioned band Free and also Foghat! Sometimes success is just a matter of timing I guess! Though French and Leaf Hound were there at the right time with the right sound and seemed to travel in the same circles as "all the right people", the group almost comes across today as Spinal Tap without the longevity. However, if you just can't get enough of the heavy seventies sound, this record is a lot more fun than Tons Of Sobs or Quadrophenia! Sometimes a good rock albums is just about the rocking, ya know?
