Jefferson Airplane's final album was a live record and is not generally considered one of their better ones: it's probably best remembered for the flying toasters on the cover. By this time, they had lost two members from the classic line up (drummer Spencer Dryden and founder/vocalist Marty Balin) and replaced them with the drummer from The Turtles (John Barbata), the bassist from Quicksilver Messenger Service (David Freiberg as a singer in place of Balin) and a sixty year old fiddle player (Papa John Creech). By the following year, the group would split into Hot Tuna (Jack Casady and Jorma Kaukonen's side project since about 1969) and the rechristened "Jefferson Starship" (though that name had first appeared on a 1970 Paul Kantner solo album). Coming on the heels of two dissapointing studio albums (the early 70's Bark and Long John Silver), on paper this really seems like a totally unnecessary album. However, the lack of personal chemistry (and perhaps too much chemistry of the pharmaceutical kind) turned the band into an uncharacteristically heavy and loud rock band that belies their hippie jam band roots. Indeed, it could be their "most rockin'" album of all.
