"album" by Public Image Ltd. (1986)
CLASSIC ALBUM OF THE WEEK
Public Image Ltd. "album"  1986 (UK/USA)
This is a singular release by PiL, the band founded by John "Johnny Rotten" Lydon after he quit the Sex Pistols. It isn't really an album by a band - the entire original PiL line-up aside from Johnny had quit by 1984. He found himself in New York working with producer and bassist Bill Laswell, who brought in legendary studio pros like Steve Vai (80's Zappa band), Bernie Worrell (P-Funk), Ginger Baker (from CREAM!), Ryuichi Sakamoto (Yellow Magic Orchestra), and even Tony Williams from the Miles Davis Quintet! But it just wouldn't be "Rotten" to do a flashy supergroup solo album, so the record came out in a generic sleeve that contains no information at all about who played on it. Though this "period" of Public image was very short (one album) it stands up as one of the more interesting iterations of the band. But really, there are only three great versions of PiL: the original 70's group with Levine and Wobble, the 21st century version of the band (the same four guys since 2009), and this week's classic album.
