CLASSIC ALBUM OF THE WEEK
The Pretty Things "S.F. Sorrow" 1968 (UK)

The Pretty Things are one of the great "forgotten" bands of the 1960's whose reputation has only grown over the years. Apparently their 1968 album S. F. Sorrow was the first "rock opera" (though it beats me what it's supposed to be about.) At any rate, it's a truly fine batch of tunes, and at their best the band played heavy rock with the best of them. The band achieved a certain popularity in Europe, but never really caught on in America -- though they gave it a serious try later on in the 1970's. Interesting trivia: the drummer on this Pretty Things album is "Twink", the notorious hippie freak who would go on to found the even heavier and sleazier Pink Fairies!
Here are a bunch of cool Pretty Things video clips: "LSD" is actually a song about money (the symbols for pounds, shillings and pence look like L, S and D) -- but there's no mistaking the psychedlic intentions of "I See Fuzz", a total freakout man! From their follow-up album Parachute from 1970 (Rolling Stone magazine's pick for best album of that year by the way), here's "Cries From The Midnight Circus" and "Sickle Clowns". Since S. F. Sorrow only became recognized as a classic in recent years, the only clips of the band performing those songs seem to be from their latter day reunions -- here's "Baron Saturday" and "Old Man Going" featuring special guest David Gilmour of the Pink Floyd.
